Background: the rockfall and the earlier schedule
A communication update the City sent Council on June 5, 2026 says a rockfall at Dewitt Hill on the evening of May 10 led the City and Hamilton Police to close Dewitt Road. It reported no injuries, no damage to vehicles and minimal roadway impact, because existing concrete barriers prevented significant effects on the right of way. It said Ridge Road would also need a closure for long-term stabilization and culvert work, which could include culvert upgrades or twinning, roadway reconstruction, ditching and a drainage outfall, and that one lane of Ridge Road had been reopened under controlled traffic.
That June update gave a tentative completion of August 2026 for Dewitt Road and of September 2026 for the Ridge Road work. The October 23 announcement runs to December 18 and does not say whether Dewitt Road itself has reopened. The City's road closures page, last modified October 23, lists the new Ridge Road closure beginning October 26 and also still carries an earlier entry for Ridge Road between Tapleytown Road and Third Road East, closed from May 12 until further notice.
Update: Dewitt Road stays closed
Update, October 30: A further communication update to Council, Dewitt Road Closure Update (TRANS2602(c)), dated October 23 and posted on the City's council communication updates page, says Dewitt Road will remain fully closed in each direction throughout the construction period, and Ridge Road will be fully closed in each direction between Third Road East and Tapleytown Road. It says the City has contracted Rankin Construction Inc. for the repairs: culvert replacement, a gabion retaining wall, steel beam guiderail, asphalt paving and escarpment stabilization, with work on the two roads done at the same time where possible and the road reopened once all of the work is complete. It gives the work as about eight weeks, substantially completed in late December 2026, weather permitting, and says overall completion is tentatively anticipated for December 18. The City's closures list, last modified October 29, now gives the Ridge Road closure's end as late December 2026.
During construction, the update says, through traffic is detoured via Green Mountain Road East, local and emergency access to addresses from 488 to 588 Ridge Road is from Third Road East on the west side of the closure, and access for essential services, including waste collection, will be coordinated. It says a City on-site inspector will be available to explain the work to area residents, and that a 24-hour emergency hotline, 905-577-4205, will be set up. The update lists Ward 10 as affected; the City's October 23 announcement says Wards 9 and 10.
Other long-running closures on the City's list
The same City page lists several other scheduled restrictions outside the downtown core. These are as the City worded them on October 23, and dates can change.
- York Road from Plains Road to Newman Road: closed from October 13 to November 10, road work.
- Middletown Road from Sodom Road to Highway 5: closed to November 30, for Ministry of Transportation roundabout construction.
- Jerseyville Road West between Paddy Greene Road and Shaver Road: lane restrictions to the end of November, road work.
- Nash Road at King Street and Queenston Road: lane restrictions to the end of December, water works.
